You said when you met me you’d make me your bride, oh you were so young back then
Then I said that I loved you and would for life, if even for just pretend
But all of that summer we were so real, real as young hearts could be
Me at your side and you at the wheel sky and road, all we could see.

But as I sit here, wondering, where we went wrong…
I believe I’ve listened to one too many American love songs.

Then I said as we left Illinois behind “this is just what we needed to do,
Oh and money and food would come in good time” we both believed this was true
And that “the west coast is waiting just for our kind” dreamers with nothing to lose.
